Tunes From The Goodman Manuscripts

"Copperplate welcomes the launch of a new CD by Mick O’Brien (uilleann pipes, flute, whistle), Emer Mayock (flute, whistle) & Aoife Ní Bhriain (fiddle): TUNES FROM THE GOODMAN MANUSCRIPTS. The tunes are drawn from ITMA’s 1998 book publication Tunes of the Munster Pipers, edited by Hugh Shields from the 1860s music manuscripts of Canon James Goodman (a second volume of selections is nearing completion). One of the aims of the original publication was to provide contemporary musicians with ‘new’ traditional music which they might re-create for the present time, and many musicians, especially uilleann pipers, now include Goodman tunes in their repertories. This CD is the largest recorded selection to date from the Goodman manuscripts, and is splendidly arranged and played, as would be expected from the musicians here involved in the project."

"Uillean piper Mick O’Brien was born in Dublin, and started playing the pipes at 9. Since then he has performed with the likes of The Dubliners, Frankie Gavin and the RTÉ Concert Orchestra.

Emer Mayock is a musician and composer from Co. Mayo. A multi-instrumentalist, she has produced two albums: Merry Bits of Timber and Playground, the latter comprising mostly her own compositions.

Joining them is Mick’s daughter Aoife Ni Bhriain, an amazing fidlle player who recently won the Seán Ó Riada Traditional Fiddle competition. The trio perform music drawn from the Goodman manuscripts, a treasure trove of Munster tunes collected in the 1860s."
