DANú,

have honed their performing skills and made many new friends all over the world.
Now their brilliant stage show has been captured on the DVD, Recorded in Dublin's
prestigious venue, Vicar's Street. On the night of MAY 6TH 2004. The 1-hour
concert is the centrepiece of this DVD. The band invited special guests to appear
with them, John Sheahan (of the Dubliners), Des Dillon, artist and puppeteer,
Phil Cunningham, Aongus McAuley (cello), Stephen McCarthy (dancer) and Sharon
Shannon. This DVD is a wonderful souvenir of a marvellous band at the peak of
their artistic powers.
The DVD itself runs for over 3 hours, among the extras are interviews with individual members of the band, a brief history of the band and some of their humorous experiences on-the-road filmed over the past few years. Among the special guests on the extras are many of their musical comrades and Mickey Dalton, Des Dillon, Tony Byrne and the legendary, Liam Clancy, a big supporter of the band over the years.
The concert was recorded in PCM Stereo Audio and 5.1 surround and was filmed by Fíonn Mac Giolla Chuda who was very involved in the production of the DVD by Planxty at Vicar Street. You will find many references to Planxty and their groundbreaking work in this production. We believe the artwork is reminiscent of the first Planxty LP all those years ago. The band are keen to show respect for their predecessors.
We feel sure this DVD will be a total delight to their many fans and will earn them many new ones, we also feel it will open many new doors for this brilliant young Irish band.

DVD Reviews:
DVD Of The Month
Our reviwer Donal Lynch, already a fan of Danu, is totally 'bowled over"
by this new addition to their catalogue.
"Live music",
just like theatre or dance sometimes has fleeting moments and glimpses of genius
that tease and taunt. At the time, you know something special is happening,
but you also know it is slipping through the ether, this human endeavour that
counts for naught in the shadow of the Creator - it's here, its gone - it's
special, but now it's a memory.
And then came the camera and the recorder and now the DVD and guess what...
we're close to the point where we confound the wispy incorporeal dimension of
live' and gifted music and encapsulate it FOREVER!
This is the amazing sense of capture and presence you get when listening and seeing the latest DVD by Irish Traditional supergroup Danu. The DVD is called 'One Night Stand' -and it's so good, any words I can think of to describe it are simply inadequate.
Danu has been in the making for almost 10 years, since their casual get together in 1996. Their origins are from the Gaeltacht (Irish speaking) area of Waterford called Ring - and this has been a forceful yet easy issue with them; they see the connection between the Irish language and their music as fundamental. It has moulded their material and direction and given them focus.
So how does it
compare with their previous six CDs?
Well, it should not stop you buying, at least, Think before you think' and/or,
'All Things Considered', but really, this DVD in terms of its ambience, presence
and panache sees Danu move up a step change to a new plateau. The music is lively
and bright and sweeps along from set to set, full of variation and well timed
syncopation as one might expect of years on the circuit and bright minds happy
in their work.
This DVD is full of wonderful duets before the whole band joins in. Apart from the music, these duets make for a fascinating aural insight of various combinations of stringed/wind instruments. Examples are the brothers Doorley on bouzouki and flute, Eamon and Donal on this DVD is stunning. It presents a mind boggling focus by seven gifted musicians into a single production bouzouki and guitar, a polka with Benny on box and Oisin on fiddle. A very special and interesting duet indeed is Muireann singing in Irish, a slow love-song, 'Mollai na gCuach Ni Cuilleanain'- normally a capella but beautifully accompanied and suited to Donnchadh's subtle quietest bodhr-n. It is pure magic!
Lots of little treats, solos and impromptu set/sean-nos dancing are included. Thanks to the DVD format there are volumes of interviews with each member, background stuff and a nice contribution by former singer of Danu, Ciaran O'Gealbhain.
This DVD is stunning.
It presents a mind boggling focus by seven gifted musicians into a single production,
showing where Traditional Irish Music is at. It connects the 'ceol' of their
grandparents with the 'cool' of the 21st century - a genre of quality and style
with lots of panache.
If Danu didn't play another note, they could say, hand on heart 'mission accomplished'.

The Living
Tradition Jan/Feb 06
After six albums and ten years on the road across the world, a live DVD would
seem a necessity. And I'm surprised it has taken this long for one to arrive,
especially as the concert footage itself is well over eighteen months old.
Perhaps to compensate for this, the DVD is certainly value for money, it features the concert at Vicar Street, Dublin, of May 2004, on-the-road footage, a history of the band and comprehensive interviews and biographical details of each member of the seven-piece band.
The concert alone would make for a good live souvenir of the band. Many special guests appear at the live gig, from dancer Stephen McCarthy to puppeteer Des Dillon, as well as some more well known Irish musicians, like Sharon Shannon and John Sheahan, and this adds a different dimension to the standard traditional music concert.
Although tunes tend to have most air time, with each set usually led by one instrument and accentuated by the ensemble, it is the songs which have most impact and this is probably due to the wonderfully unusual contralto of Muireann NIC Amhiaoibh. Her rendition of Richard Thompson's 'Farewell,' infamously sung by Sandy Denny, is given a superb new interpretation where Denny's pauses are glossed over and new swells toyed with in places the listener does not expect, the flute developing the well-known melody.
The venue seems too formal for the traditional Irish music and the very Irish banter that is exchanged between band members and crowd. Danu are swathed in much blue and red light, and the audience appear to be seated in small clusters, giving the effect of an awards ceremony - something which the band, judging by the archives at the Folk Awards, are well accustomed to. And despite much of the set consisting of tunes, the audience have to make do with polite foot tapping, whoops and cheers.
The extras on the DVD, though, make up for this formality, showing the band at home in their pub sessions.
And these extras are the highlight of the entire DVD. Each 'interview' is more like a character summary of the band member where each is depicted playing their instrument, at home and with the band.
Those that do not even know much about Danu will be intrigued by the tales of musical family legacies and fascinated by the presentation of traditional music in Ireland.
And the Irish tourist
board would be delighted with the panoramic shots of various parts of Ireland
and the pride that goes with it. Sophie Parkes

WITH Danu's
announcement that they intend to cut back on touring, their new DVD couldn't
have come at a better time.
The rather
unexciting cover (apparently a "homage" to the Planxty "black"
album) gives little indication of the treasure within: mainly a live recording
of a concert at Dublin's Vicar Street venue in 2004, including guest appearances
from the Dubliners' John Sheahan on fiddle, Sharon Shannon and Phil Cunningham
on accordions, fiddler Oisin McAuley's brother Aongus on cello, dancer Stephen
McCarthy (brother of Benny the box player) and artist and puppeteer Des Dillon
with his amazing dancing partner.
The band is on top form and the concert is very effectively filmed, with great sound. On top of that there are a whole host of "extras", including in-depth interviews with the various band members.
The DVD lasts for
over 3 hours, and is easy to navigate with the tabs provided. I can certainly
recommend this as an excellent Christmas present for any Danu fan! Nick

A few months
after the release of their sixth album, a beguiling disc called When All Is
Said And Done, this DVD hits the market. It is a recording of one of Danu's
concerts given in Dublin's famous venue, Vicar's Street on May 6th, 2004.
The filming of the concert is of high quality, offering multi-dimensional audio including surround sound.
Each of the seven musicians is featured - giving the viewer enough time to enjoy their individual skills. Sharon Shannon, John Sheahan (of the Dubliners) and Phil Cunningham are amongst their special guests.
The concert is an absolute joy as well as the interviews with the members and footage of their on-the-road experinces.

Danú -
One Night Stand - DVD (Danú DVD 01)
MAGIC! TREMENDOUS! ONE OF THE BEST DVDs I OWN! . Well you asked me to be honest
didn't you? The snag is always what else to say about a band whom I've already
praised to the skies reviewing their CDs, what more can you say?
OK, I accept the challenge, reluctantly. The majority of this DVD is a no-nonsense record of a concert Danú gave at the famous Vicar Street venue in Dublin, in front of a capacity and well appreciative crowd which included friends, relatives and assorted invited guests, many of whom joined the band on stage at strategic points during their set. It really is the next best thing to being there, and puts many live videos and DVDs to shame.
All the usual Danú
hallmarks are there - the easy virtuosity of each individual musician, the ease
and panache with which they interact, the easy rapport with their audience.
And lest I be criticised for making it sound too "easy", there's not
a trace of complacency in the performance, just that fabulous mix of well-rehearsed
and properly planned arrangements with an enviable natural spontaneity. Each
musician knows just when to step back and let the contributions of others breathe
out through the texture. And those moments during the tune-sets when the y move
up through the gears (and/or keys) to take the tune round again with ever more
dashing dexterity, there's always one more notch on the gear-lever and they're
having such a great time that they just have to share it with you. It fair blows
the socks off me feet and reduces me to tears of unreserved joy and abandon!
And then there's
the shining presence of beautiful singer/whistle player Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh
(pause for mild swoon here). natural grace and poise personified (and not in
the least showing off to her dad in the audience!). Her rendition of Mollai
Na g-Cuach (accompanied only by Donnchadh's bodhrán), movingly dedicated
to Frank Harte (also in the audience that night), is an intimate showstopper
before the solo-set sequence.
Well I know I've said all this before, but it needs saying again, for Danú really are the finest out of the Irish traditonal acts I've seen live in recent years, no question. And they're such easy, charming folks to meet too, as I discovered when I compèred for them in York just a few weeks ago.
But back to this excellent DVD. The sound quality is just brilliant, and the video recording faithfully captures the sheer busy-ness of the band's presence - there's always so much going on, so many details in the ever-changing combinations of colours and textures, the measured-but-enormous-fun ambience they so effortlessly generate whenever they pick up their instruments.
There are, as you
might guess, some enticing and exciting unique features about this concert,
mainly centred around the extra-special guests. There's the generation-bridging
appearance of fiddler John Sheahan onstage with Liam Clancy's son Donal to perform
his own "impish hornpipe" complete with "demented" jazz
chords! There's the stepdancing prowess of box player
Benny's brother Stephen McCarthy - who needs Riverdance?! There's the slightly-panto
silliness of dancers Des and Peggy. And finest of all, the Grand Finale with
guests a-plenty (I haven't yet mentioned Sharon Shannon, Phil Cunningham, Aongus
McAuley, Des Dillon.) crowding the stage out to bow, blow, squeeze and strum
their hearts out in boundless energy.
The DVD also contains
15 minutes' extra concert footage, including what was for me the musical nadir,
Phil Cunningham leading a rendition of the Londonderry Air (here punningly retitled
Danú Boy!) - only the nadir because I never liked that tune.!). There's
also a sequence of interview segments and little on-the-road-tales, and even
some early concert footage including a brief excerpt from Muireann's first ever
gig with the band! All in all, as I said, a winning DVD that's the most persuasive
advocate for the power and charm of Irish traditional music at its best. David
